The Helmut Newton Foundation presented at Museum Für Fotografie what might just be the most spectacular and expensive photography book ever, ‘Sumo’. Ten years ago publisher Benedikt Taschen persuaded Helmut Newton to agree to produce a gigantic book with a print run of 10.000 copies, all signed by the photographer, accompanied by a custom-made book holder by Philippe Starck.
that’s the exhibition i went to see yesterday: all 394 photos on display, to mark the 10th anniversary of a photography publication that today is a much sought-after collector’s item.
apart from the pictures, there was also a small collection of Mr. Newton’s personal stuff, some well-known outfits and cameras, faxes and letters from his communication with fashion magazines and his wife June, and even a small representation of his apartment in Munich.
the famous patent leather Helmut Newton shoes and the ones Christian Louboutin made for him
to accompany this exhibition Taschen has published a smaller and revised version of the book for the regular book market.
